cass-elections

The Cass County Auditor administers federal, state, county, city, school, and special elections for Cass County. This page keeps election information, notices, sample ballots, voter links, and election results in one place.

Types of Elections

Primary Elections

Date: First Tuesday after the first Monday in June of even-numbered years.

Purpose: To determine which candidates will represent a political party on the ballot in the November General Election.

Other Information: Voters must be registered members of the political party whose primary they wish to vote in. Each party’s ballot includes only that party’s candidates. For example, the Republican ballot lists only Republican candidates, and the Democratic ballot lists only Democratic candidates.

General Elections

Date: First Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even-numbered years.

Purpose: To elect federal, state, county, township, and other officials.

City/School Elections

Date: First Tuesday after the first Monday in November of odd-numbered years.

Purpose: To elect city and school officers, including mayors, city council members, and school board directors.

Special Elections

Date: Held as needed.

Purpose: To fill vacancies, approve public measures, and address other purposes allowed by law.

Caucus

Date: Typically held in January or early February of even-numbered years. Dates are determined by Iowa’s Republican and Democratic parties.

Purpose: To appoint members to political parties’ central committees, select county convention delegates, and, in presidential election years, hold a straw poll as part of Iowa’s first-in-the-nation presidential nominating process.

Additional Information: A caucus is a meeting, or gathering of neighbors, rather than a traditional ballot vote at a polling place. Political parties hold separate meetings. Participants must be registered voters with the political party whose caucus they attend. Caucuses are organized by the state’s political parties rather than the county auditor’s office.
